IHL Clinic Setup

The IHL RED partners have developed an “IHL Clinic Manual” in order to support our efforts to advance clinical legal teaching of IHL and to support educators and educational institutions in setting up further IHL Clinics beyond the existing cooperation. Based on our exchanges within existing inter-university contacts to IHL professors around the globe, it became clear that an enhanced partnership among IHL Clinics is a unique experience nowhere else duplicated and that there is a keen interest in our experiences.

The “IHL Clinic Manual” is still in a draft version and will be refined over the course of the IHL RED project. Your feedback on the matter is well appreciated! We hope that these materials provide relatable mentoring and support, permitting academics to set-up their own clinics, especially in locations affected by armed conflict. The manual will guide academics in setting up the infrastructure for conducting clinical legal education in IHL, for gaining institutional support, entering into partnerships with actors working in the humanitarian field who commission research projects to IHL Clinics, and acquiring funding for clinical legal education.

The written manual will be jointly developed in close cooperation by the three Clinic Directors and their respective academic staff under the leadership and coordination of the IHL Clinic team at Leiden University.
